Greetings from the Department Head of Mechanical Engineering

Welcome to the Mechanical Engineering (ME) website at Mississippi State University (MSU).  This site is designed to provide information about our undergraduate and graduate programs and to highlight departmental activities.

The ME program at MSU is nationally accredited and strong with skilled and talented students who are taught by energized and motivated faculty.  Our program of study is challenging, demanding, and rewarding with our graduates in constant demand by corporate recruiters who come to campus.  For many years, mechanical engineering majors have been among the most highly recruited graduates on the MSU campus with average starting salaries among the highest for college graduates.

The curriculum prepares graduates to enter a wide variety of fields, such as, aerospace, oil and gas, petrochemical, utilities, manufacturing, marine, communications, computers, and consulting.  Other options for our BS graduates to consider are graduate studies in engineering and business or attending professional schools in law, medicine and architecture.

Two certificates, the Materials Certificate and the Entrepreneurship Certificate, can be earned while studying mechanical engineering. Additionally you may choose while completing your engineering degree to take business courses to prepare for a future Masters of Business Administration degree.

In our program you will have the opportunity to participate in engineering professional societies such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the American Foundry Society (AFS), and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).  Our students through their efforts and accomplishments in these professional societies continually keep our department in the regional and national spotlight.

Scholarships and graduate fellowships from several sources are available to mechanical engineering majors.  Also, you are highly encouraged to consider participating in the Cooperative Education Program to obtain practical experience while getting paid.  Furthermore, our ME faculty are actively engaged in research activities which offer you opportunities to work with faculty members in state-of-the-art research projects.

Our departmental research strengths are in the areas of heat transfer, fluid dynamics, mechanics, materials, and manufacturing.  A full complement of graduate courses is available to support these focus areas, and research funding provides the opportunity for all graduate students to receive research assistantships.
