The ME faculty is very active in research and
graduate education. The primary research strengths of the faculty
are in the areas of heat transfer, fluid flow, mechanics, materials,
and manufacturing. A full complement of graduate courses is available
to support these focus areas. A complete listing of the graduate
courses in ME at MSU, along with a schedule of course offerings, is
available on this web site under the heading Academics/Courses.

Specific programs of graduate study are established by consultation
between students and their advisors. Both thesis and non-thesis
MS options are available.
- Thesis Option: 24 hours of
course work are required along with 6 hours credit for the thesis.
- Non-thesis
Option: 33 hours of course work are required.
There is no required number of course work hours for the Ph.D. degree. Typically, a Ph. D. candidate will take 8-10 courses beyond the masters degree. Specific Ph.D. course requirements are determined by
the student's major professor and graduate committee. A written
and oral qualifying examination is required within the first semester
of Ph.D. course work.

Acceptance to
the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Program requires an ABET accredited undergraduate
degree in Engineering and a good academic record (B average or better).
All applicants are treated on an individual basis, and additional undergraduate
course work may be required to eliminate deficiencies. The Graduate
Record Examination (GRE) is required for students who do not graduate from
ABET accredited programs.
