The mission of the Department of Mechanical Engineering
,is to educate students in fundamental engineering principles, thus enabling the understanding of existing and next generation technologies relevant to research and engineering practice.  All graduates will receive a broad
education that will enable them to be successful in industry or academia, the profession, and the community.

To carry out this mission, the Mechanical Engineering faculty, with input from other constituencies, has established the following objectives that describe the expected accomplishments of graduates
during the first few years following graduation:

Program Objective Outcomes
1. Demonstrate competence in applying the fundamentals of mathematics, basic sciences, and engineering sciences to the practice of engineering. 1.1 Graduates will demonstrate mastery of mathematics, basic sciences, and engineering science.
2. Demonstrate competence in applying modern engineering analytical and experimental methods and tools to the practice of engineering. 2.1 Graduates will demonstrate mastery of system simulation, including developing system models, conducting simulations, and explaining results.

2.2 Graduates will demonstrate mastery of instrumentation necessary for beginning mechanical engineering practice.

2.3 Graduates will demonstrate mastery of experimental data analysis including basic statistics and probability and uncertainty analysis.
3. Utilize the engineering approach to problem solving in the design of systems and devices. 3.1 Graduates will demonstrate mastery of engineering problem solving approaches.

3.2 Graduates will demonstrate intuitive understanding of mechanical engineering systems and devices.

3.3 Graduates will demonstrate ability to design mechanical engineering systems and devices.
4. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to work in teams.

4.1 All graduates will fulfill the MSU College of Engineering Fine Arts/Humanities/Social-Behavioral Sciences Policy.

4.2 Foster diversity of the undergraduate student body.

5.1 Graduates will demonstrate good oral presentation skills.

5.2 Graduates will demonstrate good writing skills.

5.3 Graduates will demonstrate good teamwork skills

5. Demonstrate ethics in engineering practice and exhibit growth in the profession.

6.1 Graduates will demonstrate an understanding of ethical and professional practice.

6.2 Graduates will acquire an appreciation of the impact of engineering decisions in a global-societal context.
