Dr. Steven R. Daniewicz

STARKVILLE, Miss. – A Bagley College professor received top honors from one of the world’s largest standards-developing organizations.

Steve Daniewicz, a mechanical engineering professor, now ranks as a Fellow and holds an Award of Merit with ASTM International.

“We are proud of Dr. Daniewicz’s leadership in ASTM. His efforts have brought additional visibility to his department and our college,” interim dean Jason Keith said.

The rank of Fellow is the highest grade of membership in many professional organizations. Similarly, the Award of Merit is the highest accolade recognizing members’ service to the society and participation in committee activities.

As a researcher, Daniewicz focuses on fatigue and fracture mechanics and modeling. His research success and leadership experience prompted his selection for executive membership on ASTM’s committee E08 on fatigue and fracture and a term as chairman of a subcommittee on education and research. He also serves as a representative of ASTM for the U.S. National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and manager of the annual graduate student presentation competition.

Daniewicz’s work has been featured in more the 65 publications, including 40 refereed journals and six books. His research has been funded by some of the industry’s most recognizable organizations including NASA, the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. He has twice received the MSU Hearin Professor award, which recognizes outstanding teaching and research and has served on several committees.

Before his career in the Magnolia State began in 1994, Daniewicz worked as a research engineer at Babcock and Wilcox Research Center in Ohio. He received master’s and doctoral degrees from Ohio State University in welding engineering and mechanical engineering, respectively, and holds a bachelor’s degree in welding engineering from Arizona State University.

Founded in 1898 as the American Society for Testing and Materials, ASTM International is a not-for-profit organization that develops, writes and establishes standards for materials, products, systems and services. ASTM members and their respective committees are responsible for the publication of the Annual Book of ASTM Standards, which outlines more than 12,000 ASTM-approved regulations.
