Freshmen earn awards for service-learning projects

December 9, 2013

More than 150 mechanical engineering freshmen put their education into action as part of the introduction to mechanical engineering class.

Called service-learning, this aspect of the class asked students to develop proposals for and implement projects that would help the community through mechanical engineering and the students at Mississippi State.

The projects include, developing an interactive, education space for the MSU Visual Arts Center, working with students through Mississippi 4-H, assisting with Bagley College-sponsored Family Engineering Nights, and arranging science, physics and engineering lessons and demonstrations for young audiences at Sudduth Elementary School. Some students also mentored high school teams participating in the Mississippi BEST Robotics Competition.

The semester-long program culminated with a poster exhibition November 20 at the Bost Extension Center. The presentations were voted on by senior mechanical engineering students, among others, to recognize the best performing students.

Best Overall Presenters: Emma Hoelzel, Troy Atchley, Cory Robinson, Mitchell Henry, and Bret Reinhart for the 4-H Project , Marshmallow Cannon.

Best Visual Arts Presenters: Morgan Green, Eric Fortney, Todd Snelgrove and Michael Luedtke, who will have the opportunity to see their proposal implemented at the MSU Visual Arts Center next semester.

Best Sudduth Presenters: Tom Manuel, Marilyn Page, Sarah Boles, Tucker Tracy and Jarrett Taylor

Best Family Engineering Night Presenters: Andrew Anderson, David Wright and Anton Powell

Best MS BEST presenters: Chase Stogner, Austin Craft and Nathan Swan

The service learning program was a joint effort between the department of mechanical engineering and the Center for the Advancement of Service-Learning Excellence at Mississippi State University.
