Research Summary

Dr. Luck's research is in the general area of System Dynamic Modeling, Measurement, and Control. His current activities include dynamic simulation of  cooling, heating, and power systems (CHP) for residential and small commercial facilities where engine driven electrical generators are used to supply electrical power and heat recovered from the exhaust of the engines is used for heating or cooling the facilities.  His past research  include analysis, simulation, and design of sensors and actuators, filtering of noise from sensor data, control of dynamic systems where the feedback sensor data is delayed or occasionally lost, and detection and isolation of sensor and actuator failures. He has also worked in the simulation and control of thermal power plants, vibration analysis, and dynamic simulation of the solidification process in aluminum castings including inverse heat transfer problems and pressurized feeding.

Research Activities

Inverse Heat Transfer and Pressurize Feeding in Aluminum Castings.  Accurate simulations of the solidification of castings can have a significant economic impact on the development effort by reducing or even eliminating the number of trial and error pourings required to obtain a satisfactory product.  A key parameter needed for an accurate simulation of the solidification of a casting is the heat transfer coefficient.  The inverse heat transfer problem consists in obtaining the heat transfer coefficient from temperature measurements in the casting and the mold.  The research consists in developing accurate and computational effective methods that can be used to obtain the heat transfer coefficients and the degree of uncertainty involved given the geometry of the castings, the material properties, and the temperature histories.

Porosity in aluminum castings can have a detrimental effect on the mechanical properties of the casting.  One source of porosity formation in aluminum castings is the release of hydrogen bubbles during the solidification process.  It is predicted that the onset of bubble formation can be delayed by increasing the feeding pressure.  Simulations are being developed to predict the formation of hydrogen, and experiments are being conducted to investigate the effect of pressurize feeding on the porosity formation.

Development of Simulation Software for Dynamic Systems.  This research attempts to develop a methodology to simulate and analyze mechanical, electrical, thermal, hydraulic, and pneumatic lump parameter models including rigid body dynamics. Existing methodologies for simulation of lumped parameter systems, such as Bondgraphs and Line Graphs, fail to incorporate rigid body dynamic motion in a simple manner. The methodology being investigated is based on the use of generalized efforts and constrain equations in the form of interconnectivity matrices for the simple, one dimensional, lumped parameters, and in the form of position, velocity, or acceleration constraints in the rigid body systems.
