STARKVILLE, Miss – As Mississippi State’s Bagley College of Engineering (BCoE) works to emerge as a national leader in engineering education, its department of mechanical engineering has found its own niche in the national spotlight.

The department recently held a reception honoring faculty members who have earned the rank of Fellow in the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME), a national organization that strives to promote the art and science of mechanical engineering. With his recent award, Dr. John Berry has joined the ranks of Dr. B. Keith Hodge, Dr. Mark F. Horstemeyer and Dr. Glenn Steele as the fourth faculty member in mechanical engineering to have received this honor.

Having also earned this same honor in the Institute of Cast Metal Engineers and ASME’s sister organization in his native United Kingdom, Berry joins Hodges as one of a few BCoE faculty who holds the title of Fellow in multiple national organizations. Hodge also holds the rank in the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) for his contributions in the classroom.

Nominated by their peers, ASME members are granted the rank of Fellow based on their career accomplishments and contributions to the advancement of mechanical engineering. With four Fellows among their numbers, MSU’s mechanical engineering faculty is among the most highly esteemed in the Southeast.

“This speaks highly of our faculty, because ASME is a nationally recognized organization,” said acting department head Louay Chamra. “Because this honor recognizes significant contributions over a number of years it is quite an achievement. It shows that through our faculty’s dedication to research and the field they have earned the respect of their peers.”

Funding from government agencies, industry and various endowments helps aide research in the department. As a distinguished professor in the department Steele has conducted research in many areas, including uncertainty analysis, which has been the focus of his involvement with international committees for the development of new standards for experimental error analysis. Currently serving as the interim dean of the BCoE he has helped earn the college additional funding for research, and increase its involvement in nationally recognized projects.

In addition to the rank of Fellow, Horstemeyer holds the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems Chair in Computation Solid Mechanics within the BCoE. Through this endowed research position he is able to engage in multi-scale research projects in automotive research. It also allows him to have a large role in training young researchers outside of the traditional classroom experience.

As well as being a Fellow in ASME and ASEE, Hodge has received numerous other accolades throughout his career. A distinguished professor in mechanical engineering he has co-authored several books on the subject. At Mississippi State he specializes in fluid mechanics, heat transfer, compressible flow, and energy systems research.

Noted for his metal casting research on two continents, Berry holds membership in several professional organizations and has served on several boards of review and editorial review boards. He specialized in materials research at MSU and through his continued connection with engineers in Europe is currently hosting a visiting professor from the United Kingdom.
