Service-Learning projects begin in Intro to ME!

September 11, 2014

As this year’s Mechanical Engineering freshmen prepare for their Fall 2014 service-learning projects, let’s take a look at the highlights from last year’s projects.  With the help of the Center  for the Advancement of Service-Learning Excellence (CASLE), 160+ ME freshmen students worked with five different community partners to help enhance Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education throughout Mississippi.  While working to accomplish the goals of their community projects, the ME students simultaneously developed a foundation essential to being a successful engineer in society.  Last year’s community partners and projects included:

IMG_20140412_141850_879MSU Visual Arts Center: Project:  Develop an interactive, educational space for children at MSU’s Visual Arts Center on University Dr.

BCoE Outreach – Family Engineering Nights: Project:  Develop and implement hands-on, engineering learning activities for MS k-12 students and their parents

BCoE Outreach – MS BEST Robotics: Project:  Mentor high school students participating in MS Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology (BEST) Robotics competition

Sudduth Elementary School: Project:  Demonstrate simple physics and engineering concepts to Starkville second grade students

MSU Extension 4H Robotics: Project:  Develop innovative curriculum and video instruction for 4-H Cloverbud youth (ages 5-8)

And finally let’s acknowledge two of last year’s outstanding students who continued to work on their successful Visual Arts Center Proposal during the following semester:

Morgan Green and Eric Fortney. After helping to develop the proposal that the Department of Art chose for the Visual Arts Center’s interactive, educational space, Eric and Morgan elected to help implement their proposal the semester after the Intro to Mechanical Engineering course concluded.  These students were an integral part of both the design and physical realization of the MSU Visual Arts Center’s interactive, educational space.

ME would like to thank all of last year’s community partners and CASLE for their hard work and for making these projects possible!
