STARKVILLE, Miss. — A Bagley College of Engineering student has been named Student Intern of the Year by a national engineering society.

Stephen Hayden, a senior mechanical engineering major, was selected by the the Cooperative and Experiential Education Division of the American Society of Engineering Education as the 2016 Student Intern of the Year. The Memphis, Tennessee, native was nominated by Angie Chrestman, MSU’s co-op coordinator, and is pursuing a bachelor’s and master’s degree as part of Bagley’s accelerator program.

Hayden was presented the award at the ASEE national conference in Austin, Texas. The award honors a student who has completed an internship related to their major and displayed quality and creative work during the internship.

“I am very honored to have been nominated and to have received this award. I am very excited to represent the BCoE, MSU and the Aerospace Testing Alliance on the national level.” Hayden said. “Winning this award means a great deal to me, and it shows me you do not have to be perfect to succeed or to be recognized.“

Hayden interned at BorgWarner in Water Valley, Mississippi, in 2014 and for Aerospace Testing Alliance in Manchester, Tennessee, at Arnold Air Force Base in 2015. In both, he used skills he gained from his classes in both design programs and concepts in thermal-fluids.

“At my first internship at BorgWarner, I designed a test stand insert that would transfer testing of a particular automatic transmission solenoid from one test stand to another,” Hayden said.

“I loved my time at Aerospace Testing Alliance. Because of it, I hope to pursue a career within the aerospace industry,” he added. “I would definitely enjoy working full-time at a test facility similar to Aerospace Testing Alliance.”

Hayden has worked with MSU’s EcoCAR2 and EcoCAR3 teams. He is also a member of the Shackhouls Honors College and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

Founded in 1893, the American Society for Engineering Education seeks to promote excellence in engineering education across the full spectrum of engineering fields. The Cooperative and Experiential Education Division promotes the improvement and development of experiential learning through cooperative education programs.
